Upcoming Events

March brings us much cause for celebration with Saint Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring
Watch for announcements of our “Think Green” specials!

This year Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day and Mardi Gras fall back to back on the calendar.  This means we will be extra busy at the Sweet Shop as we prepare sweets and treats for sweethearts and Cajun and Creole fare for our New Orleanian wannabes.  From Friday Feb 12 through Fat Tuesday Feb 16 come share with us some unique and delicious foods symbolizing these two holidays.

WE’RE ALL HEARTS
Valentine’s Day means hearts and chocolate and we will have plenty of both.   Always a sure-fire way to win someone’s love is one of our heart-shaped cakes or cookies, personalizlove letter cookiesed with a name or phrase.   For chocoholics we have our dense, dark Totally Chocolate Torte, and our Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake, velvet cheesecake studded with cherries and chocolate chips on a chocolate crumb crust (both available whole or by the slice).  Our Makin’ Whoopie pies feature orange or raspberry buttercream sandwiched between chocolate cake and iced with chocolate (these can be personalized, too).

Don ‘t forget we have a wide variety of dessert and sparkling wines that pair deliciously with our desserts.  Our favorites are Deco Chocolate Port and Tobin James Liquid Love, perfect for sipping and snuggling while watching the snow fall…..and fall…..and fall……

lAISSEZ LES BON TEMPS ROULER

Muffaletta SandwichWe have been going to New Orleans since 1985 when Rusty first took me to see the Gulf Coast area where he grew up.   We spent  5 days in the French Quarter and by the time we left,  all I could fit in was my sweat pants – I had eaten so much incredibly delicious food I couldn’t close a zipper to save my life.  We have been hooked ever since and Rusty has become a pretty credible Cajun and Creole style cook.  A few years ago we introduced some of our favorites to Sweet Shop customers, and now they’re hooked!  Come try some of them yourself.

The Muffaletta was invented at the Central Grocery store in the French Quarter over a century ago and is still a local favorite. We fill our own Muffaletta bread with homemade olive salad and pile on cappicola ham, genoa salami, mortadella, and provolone cheese.  Equally traditional is the Po’ Boy sandwich which can be filled with anything from fried oysters to roast beef and gravy.  Ours is stuffed with a cold crawfish and shrimp salad.  We use authentic andouille sausage to spice our Gumbo, and give it a nutty smoked flavor with a dark roux.

Everyone saves room for New Orleans’ desserts, ranging from the melt-in-your-mouth Pecan Praline made with butter, cream, sugar and pecans, to the colorful King Cake decorated in the Mardi Gras colors of gold (power), green (faith) and purple (justice).  Bananas Foster Cheesecake is our takeoff on that famous Brennan’s dessert of bananas and carmelized sugarValentine Cookies, and nothing is more southern than Red Velvet Cake, flavored with cocoa and buttermilk and topped with our light cream cheese icing.

Be sure to try a cup of Community Coffee with chicory.  Chicory is the roasted root of the endive plant and is used to add flavor and body to the brew.  The Acadians brought this custom from Nova Scotia to Louisiana in the mid-1700s, and today a steaming cup of cafe-au-lait is a daily ritual.
